Since 2012, the Faculty of Engineering has introduced the common admissions scheme, through which applicants can use one single code, 6963, to apply for any one of the seven BENG programmes.

Features of BEng programmes are as follows:

  • Contemporary Engineering education nurturing future leaders
  • Broad-based engineering education with a wide range of choices
  • Stimulating learning experience
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Academic advising
  • Options of minor programmes

Programme Aims and Features

Mechanical engineering is a discipline at the heart of engineering. Nothing can move or function well in the modern world without the participation of mechanical engineers. In the field of transportation, cars, railways, ships and aeroplanes are designed and maintained by mechanical engineers. Factories producing mechanical and electronic products cannot run smoothly without mechanical engineers. Likewise, power stations and buildings of all types would come to a halt without them. Mechanical engineers are trained to cope with a variety of challenges and have a very broad range of career options.

The Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering BEng(ME) degree aims to prepare graduates for numerous career paths in industrialised economies. The curriculum allows students to acquire basic knowledge in engineering science and is also flexible enough to enable them to specialise in their own areas of interest.

The academic study plan for the first few semesters focuses on fulfilling the educational objectives of HKU and the Faculty of Engineering: the language requirements, the Common Core curriculum and Engineering Core courses of mathematics, physics, programming and introductory engineering. Starting from the second year, students are taught the benchmark disciplines of the field of mechanical engineering: design, dynamics and control, fluid mechanics, materials technology, solid mechanics and thermodynamics. In the third year and final years, students have the opportunity to select electives in a specialised professional area apart from the main stream to develop specific knowledge and equip them for their future careers. Examples include computer aided design, heat transfer, stress and strain analysis, and viscous flow. In the final year, students are also required to take part in a Capstone Project, in which they integrate knowledge from previous courses in modelling a simple engineering problem. Investigations can include design, computer simulations and experimental fabrication. Finally, to broaden their educational horizons, students can take two electives from any discipline at the University; there are plans to extend this to three or four free electives in the near future.

Professional Recognition

The BEng(ME) programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Graduates can, with proper training and working experience, obtain the status of Registered Professional Engineer. This professional status is recognised through the Washington Accord by the signatories of professional engineering bodies in Australia, Canada, Taiwan, Ireland, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, the UK and the US.

Career Prospects

BEng(ME) graduates are well prepared for a range of careers. Employment is available in public utilities, the government and the manufacturing sector, notably firms producing consumer goods. Some graduates also develop their careers in the building industry.

Possible careers include:

  • Government: Airport Authority, Drainage Services Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Environmental Protection Department, Water Supplies Department.
  • Public utilities: CLP, Hongkong Electric, Hong Kong and China Gas Company.
  • Manufacturing: ASM Assembly Automation, Fong’s Industries, Johnson Electric
  • Transport: Cathay Pacific, KMB, MTR, Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company
  • Building & construction: ATAL Engineering, Gammon Construction, Maunsell-AECOM, Meinhardt, Ove Arup and Partners, Parson Brinckerhoff, Swire Property

Some graduates also pursue further studies through postgraduate-degree programmes leading to master or doctoral degrees, both locally and overseas.
