Programme Aims and Features

Civil engineering has been a major part of the general engineering curriculum since The University of Hong Kong was established. The bachelor’s degree offered by the Department of Civil Engineering is recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the UK's Institution of Structural Engineers and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. The credit-based BEng in Civil Engineering curriculum embraces a wide range of subjects including structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, construction engineering and management, and transportation engineering; and is supplemented by General Studies courses, Capstone Design Group Projects and individual projects. Civil engineering graduates from The University of Hong Kong have long played an important part in the city’s infrastructural development and contributed to its quality of life, and continue to be critical to Hong Kong’s development.

The BEng(CivE) programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Graduates can, with proper training and working experience, obtain the status of Registered Professional Engineer. This professional status is recognised through the Washington Accord by the signatories of engineering organisations in the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Career Prospects

This comprehensive, versatile undergraduate programme offers students an excellent opportunity to develop a career in civil engineering. The solid training provides students with excellent preparation for the increasing and changing demands of society. Most of its graduates enter public- or private-sector bodies as trainee engineers. Employers have included various government departments; the MTR; developers; and numerous private consulting and construction firms. Graduates are normally able to become qualified/chartered engineers within a few years. A number of them have excelled in their chosen careers and are presently occupying top-level posts in both the public and private sectors.

As the curriculum, especially for those who opt to minor in Business, Economics or Finance, can encompass subjects such as management and communication, students also have a wide choice of other careers. Some have opted for fields other than engineering such as business, administration and management. Suitably qualified graduates can also consider entering postgraduate research-degree programmes.

If you’re considering this programme, please review our programme-specific application standards and deadlines to give yourself the best possible chance of securing a place.
