Since 2012, the Faculty of Engineering has introduced the common admissions scheme, through which applicants can use one single code, 6963, to apply for any one of the seven BENG programmes.

Features of BEng programmes are as follows:

  • Contemporary Engineering education nurturing future leaders
  • Broad-based engineering education with a wide range of choices
  • Stimulating learning experience
  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Academic advising
  • Options of minor programmes

Programme Aims and Features

Jointly offered by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of Computer Science, this programme provides integrated coverage of both computer hardware and software, and prepares students to work in computer engineering, software and hardware system design, and information technology.

Students acquire a solid foundation in computer engineering through a series of core courses. They can then choose between various subjects covering hardware and digital technology, computer architecture and systems, system software and programming, and applications such as database systems, internet technology and multimedia computing. The curriculum also includes courses of general interest to broaden students' horizons.

Practical skills in hardware and software systems are learned from engineering training, internships, integrated design projects and senior design projects. Students can also choose to spend a year in the workplace following an integrated study-work programme.

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of Computer Science boast extensive teaching and research facilities, and expertise in areas including computer hardware and software, computer networks, electronics and integrated circuits, communications and biomedical engineering. Computer engineering students enjoy a wide choice of courses and the opportunity to shift from one specialisation to another as they discover new interests.

Career Prospects

The curriculum prepares students for a range of career opportunities in computer hardware and software, computer networks, data communications, multimedia processing, and internet and information technology. It also provides students with the necessary foundation to pursue higher-degree studies locally or overseas.

Most organisations are computerised, and are constantly looking for technically knowledgeable people to manage and develop their computer systems and networks. Graduates can expect to obtain jobs in government departments; service organisations such as banks and airlines; public utilities such as power companies and the MTR; commercial organisations; and the manufacturing sector.

If you’re considering this programme, please review our programme-specific application standards and deadlines to give yourself the best possible chance of securing a place.
