Flourish in Multicultural Contexts

Yara, a third-year German student from the HKU-Sciences Po Dual Degree Programme, just began her journey in Hong Kong and is excited to immerse herself in the vibrant culture, welcoming people, and amazing food of this lively city.

“As someone who has always flourished in multicultural contexts, engaging with diverse perspectives, such as those at HKU and Sciences Po, is essential to me. Combining the political science knowledge I gained in France, I have decided to major in China Studies at HKU to acquire a comprehensive grasp of the culture, language, and society of China and to broaden my global perspective in the Social Sciences. Besides international politics and philosophy, I also enjoy language learning and cultural exchanges.” Yara reveals her unique perspective as an HKUer.

“Through the dual degree programme, I have developed transferable skills, from effective communication, and critical thinking, to a global outlook, which enables me to pursue a career in diplomacy.” Yara reveals her aspiration for the future, “Having discovered my passion and potential for foreign policy and affairs, I hope to pursue further study in international public or human rights law.”

Beyond studies and academic exchange, Yara joined several groups and communities, including the HKU Astréas - Art Organisation, to pursue her passion for the arts and express her creativity through performances on the theatre team.

She was drawn to HKU because of the wide range of learning opportunities embedded into the academic programmes through internships, exchange programmes, services trips and more. Through Cedars at HKU she also managed to find an internship programme which she will never forget.

The Common Core programme in HKU allows students to explore a range of subject fields, from philosophy, visual arts to sexuality and global issues. Le Chi Lim, a  Year 2 student studying Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics), had the opportunity to study philosophy through the Common Core programme. He was pleasantly surprised by the rich content as well as the unique teaching and learning styles of HKU.

Harshita Bhattacharjee

HKU supports and opens up many career opportunities all year round for students to explore. Harshita is from India, studying Bachelor of Business Administration (Accounting and Finance). She is a freshman this year and was given the valuable internship experience at Soap Cycling Hong Kong. As a business development intern, she was not only able to learn necessary business skills but also developed as a well-rounded person.
