The Master of Research in Medicine (MRes[Med]) programme aims to provide structured research training to MBBS students of The University of Hong Kong while they are in the medical school. With the objective of nurturing a research culture among MBBS students, the programme will enable them to develop lifelong clinical and/or laboratory research skills and the ability to engage in research effectively. On completion of the programme, students will have demonstrated by presenting a dissertation that they have acquired an acceptable level of knowledge and understanding in a chosen field of study.
The programme comprises both coursework (21 credits) and hands-on research training (48 credits) leading to a 20,000-word dissertation, with the coursework and hands-on research training to be completed within the intercalated year and the dissertation to be submitted before the end of MBBS Year 6. The MRes[Med] degree will be awarded to candidates who satisfactorily complete all the curriculum requirements of the MBBS degree.
Entrance scholarships covering full composition fee and scholarships based on research progress may be available for eligible candidates.
The programme is recognised as a quotable qualification by the Medical Council of Hong Kong.
Mode of Attendance
Full Time intercalated programme for one academic year during enrichment Year 3 of the HKU MBBS curriculum.

Programme Entrance Requirements
To be eligible for admission to the curriculum leading to the degree of Master of Research in Medicine, a candidate shall:
(a) comply with the General Regulations;
(b) comply with the Regulations for Taught Postgraduate Curricula but with a waiver of Regulation TPG 2(b) and;
(c) shall have completed the second year of the curriculum and passed the Second Examination of the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University.
Advanced standing may be granted to a candidate who has successfully completed selected Research Attachment Modules in the curriculum of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of the University, subject to the following conditions:
(a) advanced standing of up to 6 credits of taught courses may be granted; and
(b) all applications are considered on a case-by-case basis by the Board of Studies and shall be approved by the Board of the Faculty.
Application for advanced standing shall be made prior to the candidate's admission to the curriculum.
