It has been ever more challenging and difficult for HKDSE candidates to prepare for the exams under the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, HKU will be introducing a more flexible admissions arrangement this year so that HKDSE candidates who perform below par in one subject will still have an opportunity for further studies.

Researchers at the Department of Microbiology of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have found that most individuals after given two doses of the vaccine (either BioNtech or Coronavac) do not produce sufficient levels of serum antibodies against the new Omicron virus variant. The public is advised to get a third dose of the vaccine as soon as possible while awaiting for the next generation of more matched vaccine. The results of the study have been accepted for publication in the medical journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.  It is available online as a preprint.

After successfully isolating the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant from clinical specimens, researchers at the Department of Microbiology at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) are now collaborating with governments and vaccine manufacturers in order to quickly advance the development and production of vaccines against the variant.

Professor Alfonso H.W. Ngan, Kingboard Endowed Professor in Materials Engineering, and Chair Professor in Material Sciences and Engineering of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), has been elected as an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) in the U.K. He is the only international fellow from Asia named by the Academy this year.

Dr Koon Yee Wan of the Faculty of Arts, and Professor Daniel Wong Fu Keung of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have received awards under the 2021 UGC Teaching Award scheme. 

In a journal article published in Biomaterials Science titled “Biofilm inhibition in oral pathogens by nanodiamonds”, scientists from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) revealed for the first time the inhibitory effect on oral pathogenic biofilms by high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) NDs.

The Laboratory for Space Research (LSR) and Department of Physics of The University of Hong Kong(HKU) joined hands with collaborators from the UK, Spain, Hungary and France, pursued an investigation to unravel this mystery via newly uncovered clues of their own discovery. Remarkably, the guest star of AD 1181, reported at the time to be as bright as the planet Saturn, was the only historical supernova(SN) of the last thousand years that has been without identification with a real object.
