The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2022 (IDAY) was held today (October 29) on HKU Campus.

This year, Sun Yat-sen Place on Pokfulam campus was transformed into the “SuperPass @HKU” interactive zone, our Student Ambassadors took the opportunity to answer queries from prospective students, sharing with them tips for preparing for public examinations and applying for different programmes, and advising them on how to choose major and minor subjects. They also shared their diverse learning opportunities such as overseas exchanges and internships. Student Ambassadors from different countries and regions also showcased their cultures through performances.

HKU’s ten Faculties held their individual admission talks and offered exciting activities such as interactive workshops and laboratory demonstrations of cutting-edge innovations. Other activities included campus and residential halls guided tours.

The Faculty of Engineering opened 11 laboratories and demo zones to demonstrate new technologies on IDAY. Students were able to explore cutting-edge innovations in engineering applications such as meta-verse, Extended Reality (XR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Robotic 3D printing. Guided tours of the Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing were offered to visitors.

The Faculty of Science organised a series of guided tours and demonstrations to allow visitors to explore and enjoy the delights and wonders of science, which included guided tours to the Hong Kong Observatory and Stephen Hui Geological Museum, and the Chemistry Magic Show.

Other highlights of the IDAY were guided tours organised by the Faculty of Architecture; clinical demonstrations by the LKS Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry; workshops and mock lectures by the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Social Sciences; as well as admissions talks by the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Law.

To commemorate HKU’s 111th anniversary, students also visited the interactive zone on LG/F of the Centennial Campus and created their personalised HKU-special NFT (non-fungible token) and avatar!

HKU academic programmes highlights

1) Newly Launched Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Programme Nurturing Future Accounting and Data Analytics Professionals
This year, HKU will launch a new Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting Data Analytics programme, to provide professional training in accounting, and prepare graduates for management roles in accounting analytics, digital economy, and other technology-driven business fields. The BBA in Accounting Data Analytics and BBA in Accounting and Finance will share the same JUPAS code (JS6781).

The original Bachelor of Business Administration will be separated as a single programme, allowing students who wish to develop a career in one of these five disciplines: (1) Entrepreneurship, Design, and Innovation; (2) Finance; (3) Human Resource Management; (4) Information Systems and Analytics; and (5) Marketing, to draw on their professional knowledge and have the option of pursuing a second major or minor from a different faculty. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their competitiveness and be well-prepared for a career in the business world.

2) Renaming of the Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences
Formerly known as the Bachelor of Science in Speech and Hearing Sciences, the programme has been renamed as Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. The programme provides students with the knowledge, skills and practical experience necessary to become a scientific, effective and adaptive speech-language pathologist. Courses cover subject knowledge in acquisition, development and disorders in human communication, speech and language, and swallowing, as well as knowledge in other related disciplines, such as medical science, psychology, English and Cantonese linguistics and hearing sciences. The curriculum adopts a student-centred translational learning approach. Students will be engaged in lectures, self-directed learning, case-based learning, small group learning, and clinical practice. They will also complete a final-year research project in the fifth year.

3) Humanities x Digital Technology New Experience
As digital technologies are extensively utilised nowadays in numerous disciplines, including the humanities, HKU launched the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Digital Technology programme which adopts an interdisciplinary structure, allowing students to study both humanities and digital technology as core subjects. Through internships, experiential learning and project-based learning, students will be equipped with the skills to drive pioneering work in their humanities areas of specialisation, with the capacity to think in new ways about technological innovation, and with the ability to build a career in a wide array of fields.

4) HKU’s Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science - Cambridge Undergraduate Recruitment Scheme
Jointly offered by HKU’s Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science as well as the University of Cambridge (Cambridge), the admissions scheme has been well-received by students over the past years. Outstanding students enrolled in the BEng, BEng in Engineering Science or BEng in Biomedical Engineering programmes will have the opportunity to obtain nominations for assessment by the University of Cambridge. Following a written test and interview, nominated students who meet the requirements will be accepted for entry to Cambridge in Year 3. Upon completion of the five-year programme, students will be awarded a Bachelor of Engineering by HKU, as well as a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Engineering from the University of Cambridge. Students enrolled in HKU's Bachelor of Science programme can also be admitted to Cambridge through the Young Scientist Scheme (YSS) to study courses in natural science subjects, earning three to four degrees in four to five years.
